Wally Schafer - MCSHOF Inductee - 2018

Wally Schafer is a 1957 graduate of Ludington High School where he set the state record in the mile run in 1956 with a time of 4:37.04. He was the state runner-up the following spring despite losing a shoe on the first lap. He earned four varsity letters and was the Orioles' track captain his senior year while also being named the All-Around Senior. He went to the University of Michigan on a track scholarship, and he ran four seasons on the Wolverines' cross country team. He medaled twice in the Big Ten championships and was three times on a Big Ten championship team. He also ran parts of three winning relays at the famed Penn Relays. While at Michigan, he earned the Yost Honor Award in 1961. He continued to compete into his 70s, whether it was 800-meter races or marathons or road biking.
